WiFi Technology First for Science ParkFull article appears at www.sciencepark.net and www.go4gain.co.uk in February 2003 Daconi, has launched a groundbreaking service to business that
facilitates access to the Internet, email and local area network
connectivity at broadband speeds, without the need for plugs or wires.
First to exploit WiFi is the University of Warwick Science Park's
Innovation Centre at Warwick, which has the system installed in its
conference suite and conservatory. WiFi or Wireless Fidelity provides a wireless Local Area Network,
allowing laptop, PDA and PocketPC users to move freely around a site
without the need for cabling. This freedom is achieved by connecting
computers by using radio signals. Daconi provides a turnkey solution to
Midlands businesses by surveying sites, installing the unobtrusive
equipment and providing training, maintenance and support services.
'This technology liberates personnel, allowing them to be flexible and
efficient since they can access and transmit information, data or messages
whether they are in the car park, enjoying a coffee in the cafe or
presenting online in the conference room - instead of being desk bound,'
explains John Barnes the Science Park's Manager-Innovation Centres. He
adds 'In the same way that mobile phones have freed voice calls from phone
lines, WiFi will free the business professional from Ethernet cables.' The
system has wider capabilities as it can also handle electronic messaging
signs, in say a public environment, voice calls and even video
conferencing.
