Frequently Asked Questions - continued
Q. What is the best location for a home WiFi system?
A. That depends on your house and how you want to connect your PCs.
The system can be wall or table mounted. It has to be wired to your telephone
line and needs a power socket. If you want to wire your PCs or X-box by
Ethernet into the WiFi system then it's best to have them in the
same room, or you end up running wires around your home. For wireless
connected Laptops, Desktops, PocketPcs or PDAs you can test the
wireless signal to find the best location for your WiFi system, a good
rule of thumb is the middle of your house. Note that the maximum range
is 100m indoors but that building materials reduce this.
Q. Can I share my wireless broadband connection with my neighbours?
A.
Technically yes, no problem. However, Daconi advise that you check the
small print of your broadband service provider to ensure that it is OK
under the terms of your contract with them.
Q. Could I charge my neighbours for using my broadband connection?
A. No. You would be providing a commercial service and would require a licence under the Telecommunications Act.
Q. How secure is my Home wireless network?
A.
To secure your Home WiFi network you need to turn on the security features,
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is the minimum security level. Two types of
WEP security are available Silver (64-bit) and Gold (128-bit) encryption.
Check the user guide for more advanced security.
Q. Why should I pay more for Gold adapters?
A. You only need to pay more for Gold (128-bit) encryption if you want the higher level of encryption.
Q. I have heard that WEP security can be broken, is this true?
A.
Yes. Like all forms of security WEP has its weaknesses. To break the
encryption the hacker needs to have the right software, a powerful
laptop, be able to capture at least 10mins of data being transmitted
(i.e. by parking outside your home for a period of time) and know that
you have a wireless network. Counter-measures include enabling WPA (wireless
Protected Access),a software firewall per PC, ensuring that sensitive folders
are not shared, and turning off PCs overnight or when the house is vacant.
Q. Can I use the Draytek WiFi system to securely access my work’s network?
A.
Yes. The Draytek WiFi system supports a wide range of VPN protocols including
IPSec (IP Security), PPTP secure tunnelling (Microsofts Point to Point
Tunnelling Protocol) and PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet)
which enables PCs to run proprietary VPN Client Software.
You will need to ask your work system administrator to set
this up for you.
Q. Can I purchase online using my Credit Card?
A.
Yes. We have a Secure site (using Secure Socket Layer SSL) for online
payments. Please note that all CreditCard orders go through our
verification process to prevent fraudulent use.
Q. Do you take returns?
